Rashell Alam
Licensed educational Psychologist

My innate desire to assist others, guided me towards a career in psychology. After obtaining my degrees in clinical and educational psychology, I dedicated several years to serving vulnerable children and adolescents. These experiences, while profoundly fulfilling, exposed the harsh realities many young individuals face, especially those dealing with issues such as abuse and familial strife. To effect lasting change, I understood the need for a system offering comprehensive support. This insight marked a pivotal moment in my career.

During this period, the concept of IDEAL took root where students with neurodevelopmental disabilities could access specialized education, therapy, and support in a caring environment. A haven where they could not only learn but flourish.

Shaping Futures through IDEAL

The IDEAL Program embodies this vision, offering a nurturing environment where students with neurodevelopmental disabilities can thrive and realize their full potential.  It is an innovative two-year certificate program aimed at empowering individuals with intellectual and/or developmental challenges in Lebanon and the Arab region. A collaborative effort between SKILD Center and Notre Dame University (NDU), with academic supervision from Lipscomb University, the program adopts a holistic approach to post-secondary education and life skills development.

The Transformative Impact and Challenges of IDEAL

Through IDEAL, we have seen extraordinary transformations. Students have surpassed significant obstacles to become confident and active members of the community through addressing academic enrichment; life skills development; career preparation; individualized support; peer mentoring; real-world experience; and inclusive campus environment. However, challenges remain an inevitable part of the journey.  Despite these obstacles, our dedicated team remains committed to providing the necessary support for success.

IDEAL is more than a program; it’s a community where students find a sense of belonging and purpose. We aspire for IDEAL to evolve into a leading center of excellence, extending our reach and impact while advocating for inclusive policies. Our ultimate vision is a future where all individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities can lead fulfilling lives.

By sharing our students’ stories, we aim to highlight the potential of individuals with disabilities and advocate for greater inclusion and support.

Student Voices, the Road Ahead, A Pledge to Inclusion

One of the most gratifying aspects of my role is hearing directly from our students about their  experiences. Their stories of overcoming adversity and building self-confidence inspire us to continue our work. While we strive to foster an inclusive environment, instances of discrimination underscore the  ongoing need for awareness and education within our community. By sharing our students’ stories, we aim to highlight the potential of individuals with disabilities and advocate for greater inclusion and support.

Witnessing these students overcome challenges, build confidence, and achieve their goals is incredibly inspiring. Each day, I am reminded of the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and supported.

As the director of the IDEAL Program, I have been privileged to witness the transformative impact of our initiative firsthand. My experiences in psychology and working with vulnerable groups highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive support systems. My role as director has enabled me to become an advocate for individuals with disabilities.

I am passionate about raising awareness, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a society where everyone has equal opportunities. This journey has been challenging, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Every success story, every small victory, fuels my determination to make a difference. I believe that by working together, we can build a brighter future for all.
