Empowering Syrian Leaders: Practical Training for Child Protection and Inclusion

The training brought together Syrian community leaders who share a heart for children and a desire to build environments where every child is seen, valued, and supported. Throughout the sessions, participants explored what it truly means to embrace diversity, not simply as a concept, but as a lived practice rooted in dignity and belonging.

Together, they reflected on the beauty and strength that children with different abilities and challenges bring to the school, church and wider community. Through open discussion, real examples, and group activities, leaders learned the foundations of safeguarding and child rights, understanding that protection and inclusion go hand in hand. They were encouraged to recognize every child as capable and deserving of opportunities to participate, contribute, and thrive.

The training then moved into practical skill-building. Participants were guided in how to tailor activities and modify programs so that barriers are replaced with possibilities. They explored psychological, emotional, and developmental challenges that children may experience, and learned to identify needs with empathy rather than limitation. Through case studies and role-play, they practiced strategies for managing challenging behavior in ways that calm, support, and guide rather than punish or exclude. A key theme throughout the training was well-being, how leaders can nurture children’s emotional safety, build trust, and offer comfort and stability in communities that have known trauma and displacement.

By the end of the training, the room felt energized with purpose. Leaders expressed a renewed commitment to creating spaces where children with challenges are not only present, but actively included. With greater understanding, practical tools, and shared vision, they left equipped to make their churches and communities places of belonging where every child can grow in dignity, joy, and hope.
