A specific learning disorder is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to process verbal or non-verbal information adequately. This disorder is characterized by persistent  difficulties in learning key academic skills. Children with learning disorders have normal cognitive abilities, but generally have difficulty in reading, writing, spelling, or understanding mathematical concepts. (DSM-5, 2013)

Specific learning disorder range in severity from mild to severe. These learning disorders come with one or a combination of the following:

  • Impairment in reading
  • Impairment in written expression
  • Impairment in mathematics

Process of Change @ SKILD

  • Complete Psycho-educational Assessment.
  • Parent Education in the specific areas of the child’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Student Empowerment and education about his/her strengths and weaknesses.
  • Teacher Partnership with SKILD professionals to implement recommendations for accommodations and modifications within the academic setting.
  • Remedial Special Education Sessions with SKILD special educators.
  • Speech and Language Therapy with a SKILD speech and language therapist.
