Nurturing Stability, Learning, and Emotional Well-Being for Every Child As a new academic year begins…

In this blog, Therese, mother of seven-year-old Nadim, shares her personal journey. She walks us through a profound experience, a path marked by more than just about dealing with complexities of autism spectrum disorder. Hers is a testamony of a mother who has had to go through years marked by significant challenges, renewed aspirations, and small, daily achievements.
The Beginning: Those Moments are engraved in my memory
Nadim was our family’s first grandchild. He was welcomed with boundless love and anticipation. For his first two years, he developed typically. He was a lovable, quick learner, recognizing colors and letters, and speaking simple words like “mama,” “baba,” and “apple.” But suddenly, his voice began to falter. The words he once repeated started to fade, and he stopped responding when we called his name.
I vividly recall a heartbreaking moment when Nadim forgot the word “apple” and he burst into bitter tears, as if he had lost something precious. My own tears welled up, matching his cries. I watched him wave his hands strangely, staring blankly into space, his silence deafening. I knew something was wrong.
When I was told, “You’re exaggerating!”
I shared my concerns with my husband, Nadim’s father, and his response was, “He’s just a little slow at talking; he’ll talk later.” Even my brothers and sisters said, “Not all children are the same!” But my heart was pounding with another feeling, the infallible feeling of a mother.
I went to five different doctors. One prescribed vitamins, another prescribed a sedative that made him sleep all day! I felt lost and helpless, and I didn’t know how to help my son.
I spent hours researching online, reading about autism and its symptoms, and each time I saw the specter of these symptoms looming over Nadim. My heart was torn apart with pain.
First School: A Year of Depression and Pain
Enrolling Nadim in school proved to be a heartbreaking ordeal. Still in diapers, he was rejected by most institutions we approached. I eventually found one that would take him, but it was a decision I quickly regretted. Every day, he’d come home crying, his clothes torn and his cheeks scratched. When I asked for an explanation, I was simply told, “He hits himself.” I tried to believe them, but inwardly, I was collapsing.
There were days when life felt like it had completely stopped. I would wake with a heavy heart and go to sleep with tears in my eyes. Not only were the teachers dishonest and the care inadequate, but neither Nadim nor I received the respect he deserved as a child with special needs.
I endured my pain in silence, feeling utterly unsupported and uncared for—not by the school staff, the administration, or even my own family. Honestly, it felt like there was no hope in the horizon.
A Pivotal Shift: The Difference That Made All the Difference (and Hope)
After much effort and exhaustive research, I finally received news of a specialized center. I scoured the internet, then called and visited the place, my heart filled with cautious optimism.
The desired change occurred from day one. Nadim walked into the classroom laughing! He waved goodbye to me, and my heart soared with joy. Just one week later, Nadim independently took off his own diaper! A month after that, he wrote to me on a small piece of paper: “I love you, Mom.”
From a child who had barely uttered a word, Nadim transformed into a child who could write and express his feelings honestly. I began to understand him through his handwriting, the looks in his eyes, and his drawings. We started to speak a language of our own, one that didn’t even require words!
Changes that brought tears of joy to my eyes.
Nadim’s transformation has been incredible, especially in these key areas:
- Independence:Nadim now dresses himself, packs his own school bag, arranges his clothes, and even takes off his shoes independently.
- Cleanliness:He returns home from the center clean and smelling fresh, a testament to their meticulous attention to detail.
- Responsibility and Communication:He actively asks for what he wants and clearly expresses his needs. He even texts me if he wants pizza or if he’s tired, and he comes over to kiss me, saying, “Don’t get tired, Mom.”
- Behavior:He has gone from hand-flapping and isolating himself in a corner to actively engaging in activities and playing with his friends. His silence has been replaced by joyful dancing with them.
Nadim today is no longer that scared and withdrawn child. He has become a boy who laughs from the bottom of his heart, he writes, he dances, and he loves life in every detail.
“Thank you, Lord.”
Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for leading us to this place, the SKILD Center. I felt that they not only embraced Nadim, but they embraced me as well. They reignited my hope and restored my lively spirit.
They are meticulously working on improving every little detail in Nadim’s life. Even using the bathroom, which I had completely given up hope on, he now manages entirely on his own.
The biggest surprise of all is that Nadim is now enrolled in a prestigious rehabilitation program. Yes, there is indeed hope for a bright future; there is life, and there is a tomorrow we eagerly await.
To every mother reading these words now
If you’ve been in my shoes for years, never despair. There’s no such thing as impossible. Don’t believe anyone who tells you, “Your son won’t get better,” because he will if we believe he will. With faith, persistence, and the right support from the right people in the right place, the impossible truly becomes possible.
Nadim today is no longer that scared and withdrawn child. He has become a boy who laughs from the bottom of his heart, he writes, he dances, and he loves life in every detail. And I… I have become a stronger mother and my heart is overflowing with hope and optimism.
